Company History

Founded 1960

Cal-Glass for Research’s inception began as a west coast distributor for a large laboratory glassware manufacturer in 1960. The company was started by Robert Cheatley who also worked with his father Jim Cheatley in the business.

Scientific Glass and Distillation Technology (1970’s)

Over the next couple of years the need for laboratory glassware repair became apparent owing to the great number of customer requests. Cal-Glass hired a couple of scientific glassblowers and a new business direction evolved as its customer base began to expand into many different industries. The company later acquired a Los Angeles County based scientific glassblowing company in the late 1970’s, which specialized in the distillation marketplace. The acquisition pushed Cal-Glass into a new direction and thus started its expertise in distillation technology.

Quartz Industry and engineering (1980’s)

The 1980’s saw Cal-Glass expand into the quartz glassblowing industry as the needs of the semiconductor marketplace expanded on the west coast. In the 1990’s, Cal-Glass brought chemical engineering expertise in house and began to develop products to recycle non-compliant liquid discharge waste streams.

Eco Stills® (1990s)

A new company, Cal-Glass for Research Environmental was founded, which was later renamed Eco Stills®, Inc. Eco Stills® continues to develop products such as the Eco Still® Gas Saturator, which is used in the wafer fabrication business and is manufactured by Cal-Glass.

Cal-Glass Today

At present, Robert Cheatley’s son Jim continues the family ties in the business and Cal-Glass for Research continues to be a full service Pyrex and quartz laboratory glassware, and research and development company in the 21st century.
